Paul-Auguste Richard was born in 2000 in Paris, he studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (2019-2024) and at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2022). He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Painting at the Royal College of Art in London. His work has been presented in several group exhibitions, including Phase at The Latente Space in Chicago (2022), Niveau 1 at the Collège Jean-Baptiste Corot in Le Raincy (2024), Un château de sable sous la paupière at AFTER Project Room in Paris (2024), Chiasmata at Greatorex in London (2025), Defying de oods at Somerset House in London (2025), Paradisio verde at MO.CA in Brescia (2025) and A Yawn and Not With ____, But a Yawn at RCA and Norito in London (2025).
“We never look at just one thing; we are always looking at the relation between things and ourselves.” John Berger
Paul-Auguste Richard explores the margins of perception, where the gaze and its object separate. His work emerges from a peripheral, distant vision, the passing glance that crosses without stopping or coming close. It is a profoundly urban gaze, guided by the constructed landscape and the visual instruments that inhabit it.
The signs he employs, neither fully figurative nor truly abstract, are de-instrumentalized. They form an alternative mimetic language, shifting attention away from transmitting a clear message toward a rhythmic movement of the gaze, from one line to the next.
The exhibition reactivates this experience of the distant gaze, shaped by the space itself. Fragmented and repeated, his pieces unfold like musical scores, measured according to the spaces and arranged in counterpoint within the site. Built upon a shared framework, a reading grid, his installations engage in dialogue from one space to another, forming a coherent body: a suite in variation.
